Below are some images of the process that I took to make these tiles, from wedging the clay and rolling the tiles, to test glazing, glazing them, and grouting them to the wall.
When I moved onto a 35 foot sailboat in February of 2024, I wanted to make it feel more cozy and homey. One way I did this was by hand-making ceramic tiles to be a hearth for the small log burner. I made 116 ~4 inch tiles to account for kiln breakages in both the bisque and glaze firings. Only 2 tiles ended up breaking, both in the bisque firing. Below are the stages of making the tiles, refining them, firing them, testing glazes, and finally glazing them with green underglaze and a clear crackle top coat for a more antique look. Below are the final tiles that I did designs on, 16 in total. In addition to these tiles, I made 100 tiles that were decorated with matching corner motifs, the same as seen on these 16 tiles.
